ABOUT OUR LESSONS

Are you looking to enhance your skills for an upcoming performance, keen to reconnect with piano, an adult beginner or able to identify your technical problems? As I have supported students with a wide range of issues, I have a range of practical and creative ideas which could help you!

I've taught many students (beginners to post Grade 8), helping them prepare for performances, festivals and exams. I'm now especially keen to work with adult students (all levels).

I am a creative piano teacher with over 30 years of music performance experience (solo and ensemble). I've received intensive traditional Classical performer and teacher piano training (see below) and also record/perform/create in pop/jazz styles. I enjoy sharing my knowledge in 1-1 lessons, with self-motivated students who are curious and committed to learn.

On hearing your goals, I will suggest a practice plan tailored for you. My students approach both technical exercises and pieces with both a sense of discipline and creative aspects. Depending on your goals, relevant music skills (such as sight-reading, aural and theory) may be included. In the lesson, I demonstrate in person, and if students wish, I can send audio recordings to help students go over information.

I prefer in-person lessons (wearing masks) but can also teach online.

I strongly believe in personal goals beyond exams! That said, some students may include exams as part of their goals and seek guidance and knowledge from me. Since 1997, I have helped students to prepare for exams such as ABRSM Grade 8 Aural, ABRSM Grade 5 theory, practical musicianship as well as Grade 1 to Grade 8 piano (ABRSM and Trinity College London). My students received Distinction marks for their compositions for Initial to Grade 8 piano pieces (Trinity College London).

I'd be super interested in hearing from you about your goals and queries!

ABOUT ME

Music has been such an amazing healing power in my life and I feel strongly about helping you connect to the world through music as well. As a multidisciplinary artist I have had the pleasure of working on many projects with different collaborators and for different clients. I’ve performed original material and covers at various venues in London and Brighton including the Southbank Centre, Rich Mix London, Brockwell Park, Brighton Dome and many more. My music video “Asians Have Feelings Too” was awarded an Arts Council Project Grant, won an award from Trans Pride Brighton and received 12 screenings. My multidisciplinary training and interests means I am able to offer students suggested research materials from listening to reading to visual arts as well as practical steps to reach achievable goals.

As a teacher who has trained with highly regarded, traditional Classical concert pianists, I have also worked in other genres such as pop, jazz and had my own band. I bring my eclectic experience and strive to help you achieve musical satisfaction, make new discoveries and grow as a musician.

When I practise, perform or create music, I am a storyteller. I am working with stories. I feel that music can help us convey an ocean of emotions. With music, we can shift mood, entertain and regulate mental health. My job as a teacher is to help demystify the process as best I can.

I have performed since I was 8 years old - many decades ago! I was taught by several highly-regarded and knowledgeable professional concert pianists as well as my mother, who was a professional accompanist for choirs.

As a child and teenager, I performed at concerts and won awards at music festivals. For nearly two decades, I have worked at a competitive music festival at the side of the piano adjudicators. I have collected a lot of useful piano and keyboard performance knowledge in the process and it feels great to pass this knowledge on to enthusiastic students.

I was awarded Distinction for my LTCL in Piano Performance and have an ATCL in Piano Teaching. I am a member of EPTA (European Piano Teachers Association UK) and I am DBS checked. You can read about my music education here.

The youtube video below is a playlist of 17 Classical piano performances by me including Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Beethoven

To see the whole playlist and choose which track to listen to, please click on the title in white next to the small round pink logo. It will open a page on YouTube.

REVIEWS

If I had thought of collecting reviews over the years, I would have had a lot more!

In recent years I have been lucky to work on funded creative projects and multidisciplinary collaborations. This has meant I limited my piano teaching hours and have not taken on new students, however the students I am delighted that my students have chosen to continue to work with me even while juggling various commitments such as managing childcare, or attending university in the UK or abroad, A-levels and also while navigating challenging health conditions.

REVIEW BY ADULT STUDENT

Angelus is extremely knowledgeable and an incredibly dedicated piano teacher. Angelus has helped me devise a learning plan to achieve my final piano grades and we work closely to ensure I am developing regularly. He offers various effective teaching techniques and is very encouraging, supportive and inspiring. Angelus is patient and personable and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone wishing to learn piano, whether young or old.

REVIEW BY ADULT STUDENT

Angelus is a very talented musician and an excellent tutor, really going that extra mile to ensure that you gain a truly holistic experience in becoming a better, more confident musician. I have known Angelus for many years-and after having Angelus teach all my children it’s now my turn to continue my musical journey. In a relatively short space of time I have build up skills and confidence I didn’t know were possible and under the expert tuition of Angelus have achieved great results in improving practical, aural and all round musical skills -and most importantly enjoying all the wonders that different genres of music has to offer. I would highly recommend Angelus for anyone wishing to learn more in any aspect from practical pianoforte skills to composing to theoretical musical knowledge.

REVIEW BY ADULT STUDENT

I studied piano with Angelus for three and a half years, from 2018 to 2022. I approached him because I wanted to take up playing again after a lapse of 45 years. I had had lessons from the age of eight and I had reached a fairly advanced level by the age of 21, when I stopped playing regularly. After retirement, I wanted to brush up my technique and explore the classical repertoire for my own pleasure and to accompany others. I looked for a teacher, and Angelus provided exactly what I was looking for, and more.

He introduced to me a variety of methods to make for more effective and enjoyable practicing. Within a few months, my playing was transformed. Others noticed and commented on the musicality of my playing. With Angelus's help, I was creating a more beautiful tone and my playing became more fluent, expressive and accurate. Angelus spent a lot of time helping me to become more free in my wrist, arm and body movements and in my approach to the keyboard. He also brought out the creative aspects of interpreting a piece of music by, for instance, using mental images or making up stories to conjure up atmosphere and emotion.

On a more practical note, I especially appreciated learning about the subtleties of using the pedals, which was an area that had been neglected in my earlier studies. I even enjoyed the wider variety of scales and arpeggios I was practicing. Among of the most valuable things Angelus taught me were how to be aware of the dynamic levels in my playing, how to create a warm and less percussive tone, and how to treat the piano as an extension of myself.

Last but not least, I found my weekly lessons with Angelus were enjoyable, stimulating and fun, both in terms of the teaching and in the pleasure of his company.

REVIEW BY PARENT OF 2 STUDENTS

Our children were transferred from their other teacher/s in 2015 and 2016 and are now preparing for Grades 7 and 6.

We appreciate very much how Angelus has been helping our daughter and son to be successful students. He makes the lessons fun and interesting, challenges them to learn more and aim for a higher level.

I have to say that Angelus is highly knowledgeable and extremely capable and an excellent teacher. He goes above and beyond in tailoring lessons, giving time-management tips, encourages my children to discover, play with more confidence and surprise themselves. Angelus' input as a teacher shows he really cares about his students and has positively impacted our children’s learning and appreciation of music.

REVIEW BY PARENT OF A STUDENT

Angelus has been my daughter's piano teacher for the last 10 years, teaching her to play her first note at 6 years old to having recently completed her Grade 8. He has been an incredible positive influence during my daughter's formative years. He has not only been instrumental in nurturing my daughter's musical abilities but he has also taught her important values of persistence, focus and managing stress and frustrations. My daughter has a confidence today which is certainly down to the countless performance opportunities Angelus has given her and his continued support and encouragement. A truly inspirational teacher!

REVIEW BY ADULT STUDENT

I have really enjoyed the way you have taught me as sometimes I struggle to understand how the pieces such as the tempo, the rhythm but with your teaching style, I learnt a lot of new techniques.

Music - Grief

These be emotional times

With everything that’s happening in the world, I feel that it’s important to take space to feel the sadness, from the past and the present and channel that into something beautiful and possibly uplifting.

Re-issuing the music in memory of WW1 Chinese Labour Corps (CLC) for Remembrance Day 2023 as singles. The individual tracks are now available!

As well as issuing/re-issuing selected Classical favourites, I create a variety of music in different styles and genres and compose music for concert, short films and performances.
